No free agent signings yet

Well, we’re about 12 hours into the free agent period and no news yet on Pete or anyone else for the Jazz. So here’s a video of some interviews from the summer practices and some links:

  • Jerry’s thoughts on Miles not showing up for the Revue - This is not how you get more PT with Sloan. I’m guessing Miles is gone. But you would think he would have announced a contract by now if he had one.
  • Araujo continues to impress - While it’s no argument he works the hardeset, we’ll have to see what kind of interest he gets from other teams. I’m banking on him being back with the Jazz.
  • More Peterson news - This and other sources are saying now it’s either Utah or Detroit for MoPete. I’m saying 75% for the Jazz.
  • And Fisher a Laker again - So this looks like almost a done deal. But Fisher has since fired his agent after he announced he’s looking for the full MLE for Fisher after the Jazz waived Derek. With as much as the Lakers are hated in Utah, does he get some boos? Especially with this coming to light that his agent might have used Fisher’s daughter’s condition to get out?

No Pete for the Jazz?

Well, we all know that Morris Peterson was in town on Sunday to meet with the Jazz, but we’ve heard nothing come from it.  Some thought we might get a deal announced yesterday.  And from what Peterson stated in the Toronto Sun, he wants to be in Utah.  But with no deal announced yet, there’s sure to be speculation that he’s not coming to Utah.  Maybe they’re waiting on a deal for Giricek to be done?  I would think they would have to be sure he’s gone before bringing Peterson in.  Otherwise, they’d be in a bad situation with 4-5 SGs.

Another reason that this might not be done is if Brewer impresses the staff enough that they don’t think they need to bring anyone else in.  The only thing with Brewer would be his lack of a three-point shot.  Also, CJ won’t be at the revue.  He could be going elsewhere maybe for more floor time.  There are a lot of factors that go into these things which is why it’s crazy to speculate because these things hinge on so much.

Morris Peterson decision to come soon

According to The Plain Dealer, Mo’s decision should be coming shortly.  Looks like it’s between the Hornets and the Jazz.

I guess it comes down to is who he wants throwing him the ball, Deron Williams or Chris Paul?  I think Utah has the advantage for a couple reasons.  First, he would be almost guaranteed a starting spot.  And despite his down year last year, I think it was a bit of a fluke because of his injury and then losing his starting spot.  I think he picks it back up to his previous levels.  Second, the Jazz are a lot better team and are contenders now.  The Hornets may get there, but they’re probably further out.

(Sorry for the photo hack job.  No PS @ work)

You may have to buy a new Paul Millsap jersey

The Utah Jazz look like one of the front-runners to land Morris Peterson. According to the SL Trib, the Jazz were on the phone with him within a few minutes of the free-agency period. There haven’t been any contract offers yet, but according to reports, Peterson would love to play for the Jazz. He also considers the Jazz ‘”a piece away from being in the NBA Finals next year.”‘

If Peterson did indeed sign with the Jazz, there would be some major repercussions. First, Giricek would almost certainly have to be on his way out. He’s the odd-man out of the group that would include Mo-Pete, Brewer, CJ Miles, Almond, and Derek Fisher. He would become a starter, but although he can play the small forward, AK currently inhabits that position. So that would mean Fisher would have to be the backup PG (which he should be), but also Dee Brown would be the third option. Would that push him to sign somewhere else where he could be at least the main backup? The starting five would likely be Williams and Peterson in the backcourt and AK, Okur, and Boozer up front.

The second team would be Fisher and Brewer/Miles/Almond/(whoever is in best with Sloan) and Millsap, Harpring, and Collins (if not traded). And it looks like they will re-sign Araujo. That’s not too bad.

The best part of the Peterson signing would be his defense. No longer would would shooting guards get a guaranteed 50 a night.

Also, does having Williams & to a point Boozer bring the Jazz some street cred? In the pre-2005 days, it was near impossible to bring free agents in to Utah. Heck, we couldn’t even bring in Ron Seikly via a trade. I don’t mean anything racial, but does having Williams/Boozer open up the door to other black players being more willing to come to Utah?

And the most important question is would Millsap keep #24 if Peterson comes to Utah? Usually the veterans play the current players for their number. Maybe Peterson doesn’t care about what number he wears. But if he does take 24, how many pissed off Millsap-jersey owners would there be? It looks like the only safe jersey purchases now right now are #5 & #8.
